Reviews for Pompeii Ruins Day Trip With Optional Pick-up From Rome
A very long day and not really worth it...

And here's why I titled this review that way. We joined the tour bus at 07:30am and drove down to Naples where we stopped to enjoy the view and take photos. All good so far. Then we stopped for lunch pizza or pasta, where a dude serenaded the group like an Italian mariachi boy, then shook his hat in my face for money. Not impressed. Then we got taken into a cameo jewellery factory and encouraged to buy something. Wasn't there to buy cameo, was there to see Pompeii. By the time we got to go through the gate, it was after 2pm.
However. Once inside the gate, our guide was fantastic! Such a knowledgeable man, he's a teaching professor at the local University and actively works on digs at Pompeii and Herculaneum with his students. I wished I could have popped him in my pocket and taken him with me. Unfortunately, the weather didn't play nice and a huge thunderstorm cut short our time after the tour ended so we didn't get to explore Pompeii any further on our own. But what we did see was mind-blowing. A reason to return (under our own steam).
The bus trip back was delayed by nearly 3 hours due to waiting for other passengers to come from another location to join our bus. Sitting in sodden clothes and shoes was miserable. We were not allowed to have hot drinks on the bus, understandable if the bus is moving but it wasn't... It was 9pm by the time we reached the meeting point again in Rome, and we were more than done with it by then. Tired, cold and hungry :(
On the whole, I wouldn't recommend this tour, the whole excursion smacked of an organised tourist ripoff.
overpriced although guide was very good

the guide was excellent and took us to newer excavations not requiring long waits in queues - but otherwise the tour was disappointing, especially the lunch at a restaurant with a parking lot packed with tourbusses - we had paid almost 150 euros each with an expectation of a more personalized experience (and were majorly ticked off to discover that most of the people on the tour had paid a lot less for the same tour)
Pompeii Breathtaking

Awesome. The tour guide, Sasha, was knowledgeable and also made it fun. Did not know what to expect but with that said it was beyond any expectations.

We had a great day out in Pompeii with gray line. Everything went smoothly and we were very well looked after from bus driver to tour guides.
